The Major Role of Water in Dental Health

Posted by Jeanne V. Devi DDS on Mar 17 2022, 12:37 AM

As we all know, water plays an important role in keeping you hydrated, providing important nutrients, and eliminating waste in the body. Likewise, water does well not just for your overall health but also for oral health, too. You do your oral health a great good by drinking plenty of water.

Water Prevents Dry Mouth

Saliva is the first defense against gum disease, tooth decay, and other oral infections. It has a natural power to wash away food particles by preventing an acid attack on tooth enamel. Antimicrobial agents present in the saliva eliminate harmful bacteria. Drinking plenty of water increases the production of saliva, keeps your mouth hydrated, and thus prevents dry mouth.

Water Keeps Your Mouth Clean

Sugary foodstuff and carbonated juices may leave behind unwanted sugar and cavity-causing bacteria on your teeth. Thus, harmful bacteria feed on these sugar deposits and end up stripping away the thickness of enamel.

Staying hydrated washes away food particles and dilutes acids produced by cavity-causing bacteria. Thus, drinking enough water keeps your mouth clean and cavity-free.

Enhances the Strength of Teeth

Drinking enough fluoridated water strengthens your teeth by preventing tooth decay and cavities. Fluoride-containing water is a natural defense that resists acid attacks from plaque bacteria and reverses early tooth decay.

Fresher Breath

Water rinses food debris out from the mouth, thus preventing plaque build-up. Also, drinking plenty of water stimulates the production of saliva which is considered as the first-line defense against harmful bacteria. Hence, drinking water keeps your mouth moist and is an essential remedy for bad breath.

Water: A No Calorie Option

A rise in the consumption of sugary beverages to quench the thirst increases the risk of obesity-related issues and oral issues as well. Replace the sugary juices and sports drinks with natural water which does not have calories and helps to reduce weight.

Water is the healthiest drink that keeps you hydrated and benefits your oral health and overall health. It is highly recommended to drink water at least half an hour before the meal to help digestion. It is not advisable to drink immediately before or after a meal as it may dilute the digestive juices.
